Transfer Test revision – top general resources
Parents often ask what resources we recommend for Transfer Test revision.
The answer is that we’ve tried lots of different options, and found some more useful than others.
Of course, we recommend our own Premium membership above all, with its revision tips, typical questions and quizzes!
But we’ve also got a few other well-loved resources to share.
To help you, we’ve divided them into General resources (this post), English resources and Maths resources.

General revision resources for Transfer Test
In this section, we’ve tried to indicate what the particular recommended product can help you with.
For keeping everything organised
It’s great for your student to have their own stationery for Transfer Test revision. Get them a big folder to put everything in, so you don’t end up with bits and pieces scattered over the house.
We love a simple A3 folder (that’s large!). That’s one size up from the more usual A4 (normal paper size) and holds everything comfortably.
You can pick these up in most good stationery stores, although they’re trickier to find than A4 versions. Art supplies shops are also good places to try. If you want to stock up, you can find sets of them on Amazon.
The smaller see-through versions are perfect for test day, as you can pop the admission card, pencils and rubber inside. If you want to see what you can bring in to the test, read this.
If you have a stationery addict
If your child loves stationery, it’s great to get them a special notebook for their important revision notes. We’ve bought ours in places like Home Bargains and Sainsburys.
Diehard stationery addicts might find something swish very motivating.
For reasonably-priced stylish stationery, we love Hema. It’s a Dutch store, but you can order online from the UK. We’ve tried everything from their coffee beans to their homeware, and it’s all been good quality with fast delivery.
Hema has great school stationery like this notebook, at reasonable prices.
And just for fun …
We’ve just discovered these giant sticky notes and they’re fab! Useful reminders for things that keep getting forgotten. They’re A4 sized, so shouldn’t go unnoticed!
And a useful daily grammar reminder with these pencils. They’re perfect for remembering the homophones you need to know for the transfer test.
Looking for some practice test papers?
Honestly, that’s a really tricky one.
We’ve checked out quite a few practice test papers and haven’t really found anything outstanding yet (if you publish great practice test papers, please get in touch so we can recommend you).
So what do we suggest?
Firstly, if your child’s school prepares them for the transfer test, they’ll have practice test papers for them. If they’re doing one or two practice tests per week in school, an extra one at home might be overkill! Far better to go over the tests they do in school and revise any troublesome topics. You can find a checklist of English and Maths topics on this website, plus links to all revision material, tips and quizzes.
Otherwise the best practice papers to use are the actual AQE past papers.
You can buy these directly from the AQE office at £10 for three tests. Each year they release the previous year’s tests around April.
If you’re going to buy some, order the most recent, as the question wording can change slightly year on year. But check with your child’s teacher first, as schools tend to use these papers too, so you might not need them for home.
